So I just started pipe welding and I think this will become a regular part of buisness. Nothing big, just well pipes and irrigation stuff.

So I found a 1985 miller big 40 for $1000. It is pretty basic and has got the 4 cylinder continental engine, with no more than 1200 hours on it. What's it worth? Is it a reliable machine? What should I look for when looking at it? Thanks in advance

That's a good deal. Make sure to check it out and weld with it a few hours before handing over the cash. Those are very reliable machines. It's worth is dependant on your location. If it runs and looks good about 2200 up here. Keep in mind I'm in the boondocks.

A 1985 big 40 put out about 300 amps @60% duty cycle has a 3,000 watt A/C power ,arc characteristics I don,t know as I have never used one . If it runs and welds in all ranges it is probably a good deal, some listed on machinery trader for $3,000 up , the engine is bullet proof but parts are getting hard to come by.
