Stainless heat tint removal..............

I've searched the threads as I'm confident this topic has been raised before....... but I couldn't find what I was looking for......

If a wire wheel or other mechanical means of removing heat tint on stainless isn't allowed, either because it changes the finish or whatever..... is there a way to chemically remove heat tint without affecting the finish on the material?

I'm sure there is....... but I've never used anything other than wire wheels or my Metabo..... but sometimes they just won't get into those tight corners.........

I used to use a pickling gel, which is just an acid but I forget which kind. Just put it on with an acid brush and key it sit a couple minutes and rinse it off with water. We had a guy come demonstrate some machine to us that used an electric current and a special wire brush that made tiny little static looking sparks, but did a good job of cleaning. My boss asked me if it would help me speed up fabrication, but I said for the price it wasn't a huge benefit. But in situations where they don't want any mechanical removal of oxidation, it'll probaby work good. You could probably search for it just as good as I could.

We use Avesta cleaners, picklin gel (hydrofluoric acid),and passivation fluid. The cleaner removes any organic residues them we put on the picking gel key it do is magic (remove the oxidation from the metal), then apply passivation fluid, rinsing with water in between each step.

I passivated with a large Surfox machine at work a few times on some stainless flotation tubes for a customer in Japan that wants all HAZ removed. Was interesting to do, but the fluid is nasty and we had to wear full protective on a hot summer day.
