I've found a Maxstar 150 STL on craigslist for $700. Is this a reasonable price? I have not TIG welded but something I'd like to try. The ad says it comes with a few rods, so I don't know if anything is there for TIG. Besides a torch and argon tank, what would I need for starting to TIG? Thanks!

If you wan't to do TIG save our pennies and buy a AC/DC unit with high frequency. Before I bought my square wave I almost bought a maxstar 150 STL but changed my mind since I wanted AC and high frequency. When I was looking for maxstar's originally they were always floating around that price. If you want a small portable stick welder that you can occasionally use it for TIG I would go for it, but if you want to do more TIG get a AC/DC.

The STL is the only max star 150 I would consider buying myself.
No need for high frequency without ac.
That’s not a bad price. An Ac/dc dynasty is going to cost a lot more than that.

My first TIG welder (actually, my first any welder) was a Maxstar 150 STL. I really liked it. Small, simple, easy to use, able to use a pedal/remote amperage control. Unit worked great. That is probably an ok price if it is in good condition, depending on what it comes with.

As others have said, there are other options out there new with a warranty for similar price. More now than when I bought mine. Just depends on what you want, and what you are comfortable with.

I started out with a Maxstar 150 STL I got on Craigslist for $700. Was in like new condition and came with the foot pedal, Victor flowmeter, HTP gas lens kit, and 3 packs of tungsten. No case.

It’s a nice unit and you should be able to get most of your money back if you resell it later. I would say if you don’t need the portability than think about something with high freq start. I find the Syncrowave a lot more enjoyable to use on DC, but they weld the same.

One downside is that it has automatic post flow that isn’t adjustable. It waste a lot of argon with 10s of post flow per tack
