I tried to get an older MAPP filled and was told it was no longer available. There is a similar product on the market now.

Have you tried it with propane first?

I do not know of anyone that fills tanks with propylene (the substitute I've seen).
What that means, is you can exchange tanks, but not have them filled. If that's the case for you, you are limited to the type of tank that your supplier has. In my case, he stocks 7lb and 14lb tanks.
Both are aluminum, and are NOT BBQ tanks.

haven't tried propane, but I thought it would heat faster with the yellow Benzomatic stuff. I'll check tomorrow and if it's just as good, I'll go for propane and spare some ca$h

 

MAPP, proper, is no longer produced and hasn't been for several years. Propylene (propene) or a propylene/LPG blend is what is used now. Ask at a local welding supply.

 

Wait for Tozzi to chime in here. He uses propylene.

3600 F for the yellow propylene stuff
3450 F for the blue propane stuff

simple maths: 3600 - 3450 = 150 degrees of difference.

I guess it will be allright for my thin walled bike tubing (0,03 inch thick)

 

There is really no comparison... the yellow stuff is way better than propane.
