How To Fool The Synergic Settings Of A MIG Welder?

I hooked up my new Bestarc MIG welder today.

The welder pretty much uses synergic settings for adjustment,,
Choose wire diameter
Choose Flux core, or gas
Set the amps for the thickness

Well, it only has settings for CO2 gas,, my flowmeter only fits the 75-25 tank,, (I have the CO2 tank adapter on order)

Anyways, if I weld with 75-25, should I tell the machine the steel is thicker,, or thinner than actual thickness?

It welds REAL NICE on 1/16" thick steel,, that was my first MIG weld since 1972,,,

I gotta say,, this MIG welding feels like cheating,, nothing like stick welding,,
My grandson is gonna like this!! :cool2:

I might have to get a couple cans of spray cheese, and some Saltines to teach him what a fillet bead is,,

On the Bestarc Mig 145. You can turn off the synergic mode, by pushing the knob in (clicks). Then it will use volts and wire speed (-30 to 30). Whatever units those are in.

For the question, I'd think I'd set the amps a smidge higher, since with co2 runs a little hotter for same amps as 75/25 mix.

Not a bad little machine, but really hate the shortness of the mig cable. Like 4.5 ft of cable not counting the gun. Just aggravating in use, even when welding on something small. Keep having to reposition. The other thing, is the 1 or 2 lb spools run out too quick and cost way more per lb than the 10lb or larger spools. (I'm almost tempted to wind my own 2lb spools from a 33 or 44 lb spool).

I have had those same thoughts,, but, this machine is mostly for my 10 year old grandson,,
If he goes through a dozen spools of wire,, it will be a shock.
I may be too old to acclimate to MIG welding,,,, time will tell,,

I genuinely dislike synergic machines....

I try them, get irritated, turn feature off and weld happy. ;)

I like synergic machines as long as you can trim either the arc length (voltage) or wirespeed independently. In this case it doesn't sound like that's possible unless you put it in manual mode.

The machine wants you to select an "amperage" that corresponds to the material thickness.
But, the only choice is for CO2 gas,, right now, I can only use 75-25,, so i was trying to figure out if I should raise the amps, or lower,,

As you raise the amps, the volts also goes up.
