Hello,

My name is John and I have to bid a welding job for fabricating part of a shipping container to turn it into a house. This will be the first time I've done something like this but I've been a welder (MIG,TIG,Stick) for over 30 years. I"m hoping somebody has done this and can give me a rough estimate for what I should charge. Here is exactly what the general contractor sent me that I will be doing for a singe size container: shim/level, weld to anchors, one door frame, (6) 3x5 windows, and shed roof. They are also requesting a bid for a double container which includes all of the welding for for the single one plus weld together the two singles to make a double unit. Thank you to anyone that can give me some advice.

Charge mobile rates if it's on-site.
Time and materials, no bid. Sounds like you have enough experience that you know you won't be wasting their time going too slow.

I look at stuff by days to get a rough idea for my own use.
Is it 1/2 day, full day or multiple days.

Some people want a bid, to stay on budget and welders like us dont want to screw our selves or overcharge and lose the job. Try this, tell the customer your concerns about bidding, and offer this. You'll work for 8 hours (1 day) no charge. Yeah, ballsy, I know. At the end of the day you disclose your hourly rate, if they like you work your in! if not FVCK EM! When you get hired you charge them for the first day.
