Hey guys,

New member, but I've been staring at the forum for a while.

Is anyone ASME certified for TIG welding here? What I know is that high pressure steam boilers and their implements need to be welded by a certified BPV TIG welder... right?

There's a lot of good information on ASME's website, but there isn't a down-and-dirty explanation of how the boiler welding industry goes about approval. Here's my questions:

  • Can an ASME welder stamp his own work for approval?
  • Does a separate inspector have to come by and inspect work done by an ASME certified welder to approve the work completed?
  • Is a stamp just for a product certification or for repairs as well?

If the questions are just... confusing to answer, I'm pretty much looking for a rundown of boiler welding certification.

Thanks guys,

Matt

YOU have to be certified by taking a welding test to the appropriate code with the according process. It must be inspected and tested by a qualified inspector and stamped by a CWI.

depending on the application, a new install and / or a repair must be made by a certified welder (you after you pass your test) and then inspected by a qualified person (not you) and / or signed off by a CWI (also not you).

You cannot certify yourself or your own work, it is a conflict of interest and an ethical mess.

It's only been... 7 years since I was looking into this.

I have a machine shop now, but still looking at becoming an S-Stamp power boiler design and fab shop. More likely I'll do work for a shop which already has the stamp; The ASME certification process for a business is long and expensive. Anyone have experience with the standards? How aggressive are the changes when they roll out a new edition?
