American Bosch SA200

I'm restoring a 1969 SA200 with a Bosch MRD magneto. When I bought it it wasn't running engine was seized and the previous owner had disassembled the magneto. I've had the generator coils and armature cleaned and tested they are now being dipped and baked. Engine is in the machine shop. I ordered a Rebuild kit for the magneto and reassembled it think I got everything back together correctly but I don't get spark unless I spin it backwards. I didn't take it apart and I can't find a manual for it so I think maybe I have something timed wrong. The impulse coupler was disassembled also. It has timing marks behind it not sure where they should be. Does anyone have a manual or pics of one. I really appreciate any help any of you guys can give me. Thanks!

It sounds like (from my limited experience) that you have some of the springs and drive plates in backwards or oriented incorrectly.

If you look closely at the plates behind the drive dogs and on the fiber gear there will be two timing marks: "C" denotes clockwise rotation and "A" denotes anti-Clockwise rotation.

I will try to find some pictures of what i mean (when i tore down my Bosch magneto ... and ultimately sent it out for a magnificent rebuild) after i get back from getting my son to school 15 minutes late.:laugh:

Her are some picks of the way I assembled it didn't come with the coil so coil is new along with cap condenser etc. Also it's a 71 put wrong year in first post.

What I did notice just now is that using a spark tester I have spark in reverse but with a paper clip I don't. So not sure if that's because I can't spin it fast enough by hand in reverse without impulse coupling so spark is week.

the rotor button (or rotor bug) will turn clockwise when looking at the cap of the magneto. Firing order is 1-3-4-2 ... going clockwise on the cap from the top right #1 post.

If you cannot get a good spark out of it, it may need to be re magnetized. If all else fails, and you need it, PM me and i can give you the name and contact info for a great magneto guy. After getting frustrated with mine i sent mine out for a pro rebuild. Needed a new coil and it needed to be re magnetized ... I can say, with no doubt in my mind after being bitten twice, it is a very hot mag now.

Thanks! I had the old condenser that came out of it so I swapped it to check and now I have spark turning coupling clockwise which also turns rotor clockwise. So the condenser in the rebuild kit may have been bad spark is still weak so I will pick up a new condenser tomorrow and try. I sent you a pm just in case it needs remagmetized. Do you remember what it cost?

.015" is correct. Bosch or Fairbanks-Morse.

I got it figured out. The rebuild kit I bought apparently came with a bad condenser picked up a new one today and now have spark with spark tester and paper clip to cap bolt looks hot enough to me we'll see when I get engine back together. Thanks for the help.
